Umuahia – AN Australian group has donated millions of naira worth of hospital equipment to boost healthcare delivery services at the Presbyterian Joint Hospital, Ekoli Edda, in Afikpo-South Local Government Area of Ebonyi state.
The equipment, which was attracted by an Umuahia-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Center for Human Protection and Development (CEHPROD), included autoclave machines, theatre equipment, refrigerator, beds and beddings, mosquito treated nets, stretchers, trolleys, among others. They were donated by the Australian Agency for International Development.
Administrative Secretary, Grants and Donor Agencies, Government House, Abakaliki, Mr. J.E.Ekuma, who inaugurated the equipment on behalf of the state government, said the gesture by Australia was in line with the vision and determination of the state government to provide effective healthcare delivery to people of the state.
Florence Ogbonna, board member of CEHPROD, noted that the donation was aimed at curbing maternal and infant mortality in Ekoli community, and the environs, and assured that more donations would still come to the people.
“We want to see that it (equipment) is fully being put to use. If that is done, what you are seeing today is yet nothing because we will be coming up with greater things for this community,†Ogbonna said.
The Executive Director of CEHPROD, Nnenna Ude, in her remarks, said that their intervention was prompted by the inability of the community and the church to equip the hospital.
