MAKURDI – As well-meaning Nigerians continue pay tributes to late human rights activist and anti corruption crusader, Chief Gani Fawehinmi SAN, Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State has joined millions of Nigerians and the international community to mourn the passage of the legal luminary.
In his condolence massage made available to newsmen in Makurdi, Governor Suswam noted that the Chief Fawehinmi lived his life fighting for the rights of the ordinary Nigerians and the cause of democracy.
According to the Governor, “Gani was not just an arm chair critic of the status quo but also an exemplary activist and reformer who usually backed his views with concrete action and this explained why he was always in confrontation with the establishment especially the military regimes since independence.â€
The Governor noted that though Gani has gone, he has left a legacy of service, consistent fight and defence of the principles of governance based on the tenets of rule of law which was the life time vision of the legal luminary.
Suswam further recalled that Gani’s intellectual and professional works were a veritable source of data and reference for the present generation and those yet unborn.
Praying God Almighty to particularly grant the immediate family the courage and strength to accept the reality of his death, Suswam challenged younger generation of Nigerian lawyers to take on the gauntlet and continue from where Gani stopped with the spirit of service, selflessness and defence for the right of the ordinary people.
