Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway now death trap

By Anayo Okoli

Umuahia—THE Enugu-Port Harcourt express way is getting worse by the day and is now a death trap as anumber of accidents are recorded on this very busy road everyday.

The road can best be described as a death trap as no two kilometers of the road from Okigwe stretch to Umuahia is free of deep potholes.

No less than twelve accidents, some of them fatal, occur on this road on daily basis because motorists drive against traffic as a result of the bad state of the road, a motorist told Vanguard.

The worse portion is the stretch between Eziachi in Okigwe council of Imo state and Ofeme in Umuahia North council of Abia state. This portion has failed and on daily basis, no less that eight lorries fall on the failed portion, thereby causing traffic menace to other road users.

In some instances, traders conveying food stuff and cattle from the North to the East and South-South parts of the country are stranded for days, as their vehicles could not pass through the failed portion of the road and hoodlums usually cash on the bad state of the road, especially around the Eziachi axis to attack motorists and commuters, who are either stranded or caught up in traffic at the bad spots.

“FERMA seems not be interested in at least patching up the failed portions to make them passable till the rains subside”, an angry commuter told our reporter.

“It is shameful that this is a federal road in a country that has enormous wealth. Can you image what we are passing through trying to wriggle out of this place which is always a target for hoodlums?

I wonder if the Minister of Work ever makes out time to go round to see some of these roads for himself. It is shameful”, lamented another motorist, trapped in one of the bad spots.
