Edo re-run election: Go to court, group tells PDP

By Victor Ahiuma-Young
A group, under the aegis of Vanguard for a Better Edo (VBE), has advised leaders of the People Democratic Party (PDP) who feel aggrieved with the outcome of  the recent election re-run into Edo State House of Assembly for Akoko-Ado Constituency 1, to go to court and seek legal redress instead of making a wild allegation of rigging.

The group called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo, to be a professional and avoid being used by the PDP and others in the state who are bent on frustrating development in Edo State.

In a statement by the group’s National Coordinator and  Director of Grassroots Mobilisation, Messrs Donatus Ossai and  Bernard Efosa, they however argued that they are not surprised by the defeat of PDP by the AC because leaders of PDP never believed any party could stop them from rigging election.

The statement reads in part:  “We recall that a day after the election, precisely on Sunday August 23, the national dailies were filled with stories of how dozens of armed thugs were arrested at Igarra and Lampese home of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the election, Mr. Anslem Agabi, by anti-riot policemen when they allegedly attempted to snatch ballot boxes at polling units.

As if that was not enough, the next day being, Monday, August 24, Nigerians woke up to read in the national dailies the account of how a combined team of Policemen and State Security Service (SSS) led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Mr. Olufemi Adenaike, rescued officials of Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), from the house of a member of House of Representatives, Col Tunde Akogun (rtd).

“Why is it that Mr. Onovo is yet to parade the arrested thugs at Igarra and Lampese home of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the election, Mr. Anslem Agabi, when they allegedly attempted to snatch ballot boxes at polling units while those who allegedly kidnapped INEC officers and hijacked electoral materials are also yet to be arrested and prosecuted.

“We are convinced that PDP and its public commentator agents are not talking about going to the electoral tribunal to challenge AC’s victory because in their heart of hearts, they know that AC won the election convincingly.

Every Nigerian knows that PDP only thrives in election rigging. PDP members never believed in free and fair election, but rigging. If they are so convinced that the election was rigged, they should go to the law court to prove their case.

We are sure that the quarrel of PDP and its agents is not actually because they lost, but because Nigerians are beginning to find anti-dote to their rigging machine.”
