Don’t apologise, just resign, Ekpo tells NFF

By John Egbokhan
THE Publicist of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Ben Ekpo, has condemned the Nigeria Football Federation for putting the Eagles’ World Cup qualification hopes in serious jeopardy.

Speaking against the backdrop of 2-2 draw with the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia at the Abuja National Stadium on Sunday, Ekpo, said that the Sani Lulu-led NFF board, set out from the beginning to under-develop our football.

“I remember that I voiced out my grave concerns when this fumbling board was handpicked in a stage-managed election that took away Ibrahim Galadima, who meant well for our football, and saw the likes of Sani Lulu, Amanze Ucheagbulam, Taiwo Ogunjobi and Bolaji Ojo-Oba, coming on board. I said they would destroy our joy because they do not know how to run football.

“They do not know the rudiments of football development, which starts from the grassroots, and so you cannot expect them to run a national game and get results. They have consistently neglected the basics of football development, and you expect them to turn the Eagles into a World Cup side.

“Nigerians expected so much from these politicians who are running our football and are now counting their losses. These guys do not have it and you do not expect them to give what they do not have. If they knew what they were doing, they should have sacked Shuaibu Amodu and drafted in Samson Siasia when we played a draw against Mozambique in Maputo.

“Even our victory over Kenya was not convincing as we struggled and showed low technical depth. Amodu rejected the offer to play a friendly match and the NFF stood by him, a rather shocking move in modern day football. Now that we have drawn, they are apologising. We do not want their apology but their resignations. They should vacate their office now because they have failed or else we would show them the way out”

“They chose to retain Amodu, whose tactical reading of a game is clearly suspect, or how else do you explain the poisonous staple on Sunday. These guys have rubbished the good intentions of President Umaru Yar’Adua on this World Cup project”, added a pained Ekpo.
