OWERRI— Over five thousand loyalists of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) stormed Owerri, Imo state capital, in solidarity to this year’s Igbo Day celebration organised by Ohaneze Ndigbo.
Members of the group, who wore and displayed Biafran insignia, including the Biafran flag, were led by the leader of the organisation, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike.
On seeing the intimidating number of the group, all the security personnel stationed at the venue of the event, who tried in vain to lock the MASSOB members out of the Dan Anyiam Stadium Complex, had to relax.
Speaking at the occasion, Chief Uwazuruike regretted that all the South East Governors and other elected and appointed public office holders of Igbo extraction shunned the event.
He told the crowd that his loyalists and Ndigbo were tired of the Nigerian project, adding that the Igbo target was to actualize a sovereign nation they could conveniently call their own.
Earlier in his address, the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Ambassador Ralph Uwechue, lamented that there was the feeling today that the Igbos, as a people, are being deliberately sidelined, especially in the sphere of political leadership of the country.
