ABUJA-The Minister of Finance, Dr. Mansur Muktar is to brief the Senate on the thrust and projections of the 2010 budget of the Federal Government, the Senate Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin said yesterday.
At a press briefing ahead of today’s resumption of Senate plenary sittings, Senator Folarin also flayed the slow pace of the on-going constitutional review process, stressing that it may truncate the much expected electoral reform before the 2011 polls.
Noting that Nigerians are desirous of electoral reforms before the 2011 polls, the Senate leader expressed fears that the desire may be hampered by the snail speed of the process of review of the 1999 constitution. He stressed that despite the frustrations, the Senate is committed to ensuring a successful constitutional review process.
He said, “The minister of finance was very kind to call me yesterday and he regretted the inability of the ministry to engage the National Assembly due to the long recess and I reckon that by the end of this week they will have everything rapped up and then they will begin to brief us on an informal basis.â€
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the slow pace of the constitution review exercise, Senator Folarin said the entire Senate is not happy with the snail speed of the exercise.
He said, “I am not satisfied, no one is satisfied it has been very frustrating but I think we are beginning to make progress now. On the part of the Senate we intend to go on a retreat to Kaduna next week to fine tune how to move forward the agenda.â€
