Bauchi State Governor, Alhaji Isa Yuguda has revealed how Bauchi centre got the nod as one of the host cities for the FIFA U-17 World Cup from world’s football governing body, FIFA. The championship starts on October 24, 2009.
Alhaji Yuguda also said he personally took over the supervision of the construction work at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium and other facilities for the cadet championship to ensure that there was no lapses.
“I have the list of all FIFA requirements and followed it strictly to the letter. When I noticed that there was no positive progression I personally took charge to ensure no lapses.
“No matter the number of matches that is eventually played in Bauchi, my joy is that the venue has been approved like others to host matches of the Under-17 World Cup. The people of Bauchi and its environ would be meaningfully engaged during the tournamentâ€, he said.
Already, the Golden Eaglets last group match against Argentina has been confirmed to hold at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium, a tough match that would attract virtually the entire citizenry to Bauchi.
The Eaglets/Argentina encounter would however rekindle the Finland 2003 championship where the latter was responsible for the former early elimination.
FIFA vice president, Jack Warner, who expressed surprise at the facilities in Bauchi during his last inspection visit has however said that the state and Ijebu-Ode would host a couple of matches as the championship progresses.
