Senate President condemns Nigeria’s woeful outing in Berlin

By Fidelis Ebu
Senate President, David Mark, was an angry man over the weekend following the dismal performance of the country’s contingent to the recently concluded IAAF World Championship in Berlin, Germany.

Senator Mark said it was unimaginable for the country’s athletes to attend world championships without any medal to show for it.

Speaking at a dinner partyorganised by the David Mark Foundation, to end the foundation’s sponsored two-day youth golf tournament at the IBB Golf and Country Club in Abuja, the Senate President lamented over the non-performance of the nation’s athletes in Berlin World Athletics  Championships.

Mark said that he felt ashamed while watching the country’s athletes crashing out of the different events at the Berlin world championships.

“It a very serious case. This is unlike Nigeria that used to do very well in athletics and other sports in the past. These days so many Nigerians wear other countries colours and win laurels for their adopted countries, while we come home empty-handed”, Senator David Mark said.

He, however, attributed the poor state of facilities in the country to the poor performance in Berlin as he reasoned that the inability of the nation to recognise their sports heroes could have contributed to the dwindling performance in sports and why the country’s athletes change nationality.

He charged that efforts should be made by the authorities involved to ensure that the country is brought back to its position in world sports through the provision of first class sporting facilities as well as the recognition of sportsmen and women to boost their morale.

Mark noted that the essence of the youth golf tournament was to begin a process of grooming Nigerian youths to participate effectively in other sports which people always think was not easy to play.
