Awka -Â TWO persons were feared dead yesterday in Awka, Anambra state, as armed bandits struck again in the city and robbed a commercial bank on the busy Ziks Avenue in the heart of the town.
One of the victims was a commercial motorcycle operator, while the other was said to be a customer, who was in the bank when the hoodlums struck.
The robbers had entered the town from the Enugu end of the town in a lightening speed that attracted the attention of the passers-by and shortly after, the shooting began at the area of the town, where most of the banks have their branches.
For nearly one hour, the robbers disrupted business activities in the area, as they fired ceaselessly, while robbing the bank, apparently to scare away security operatives.
However, unlike in the past, the police confronted them, forcing the robbers to abandon a jeep they came with and escaped in a commercial bus with inscription ‘Eastern Mass Transit’, which they snatched earlier.
The incident also forced the banks in the vicinity to close shops, forcing customers to abandon their monies and took cover inside the banks, while the robbery went on in the nearby bank.
Much later, some soldiers were seen marching towards the robbery scene, although it could not be ascertained if they assisted the police in fighting the robbers.
