Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Â Â Â Rivers on Sunday in Abuja said the state government was making efforts to resuscitate the Risonpalm company and Delta Rubber Company.
He said at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum that the move was to boost employment opportunities for indigenes of the state as well as boost its economy.â€œThough the companies are in a state of complete collapse, we are taking our time because we do not want an encumbered investment.
We are trying to bring in a South African company to help revive the companies by putting in place a new mill as well as trying to replant.â€Amaechi said the South African investor was ready to move in, but was waiting for the conclusion of negotiations with previous investors to avoid been disturbed when they start operation.
It is expected that at the end of the planting, they will have establish another 10,000 oil palm estate and this will bring it to 26,000 hectares at the end of the year,â€ the governor said.He also said a consultant had been engaged to come up with a feasibility study for a new 10,000 hectares of rubber plantation. Amaechi said that the state was also looking at the possibility of turningPort Harcourt into a fishing hub as a way of harnessing the fishing potential of the state.
