DUTSEÂ -Â less than 2 weeks into Ramadan fasting, prices of assorted foodstuff have risen in Dutse, Jigawa state capital, despite series of preaching and calls by Islamic Scholars and other concern individuals.
Vanguard investigations have shown that part of the food items that have their price increased during the fasting period include a measure of sugar which is sold between N300-N350 now sold at N500-N580, a create of egg sold before at N650-N750 now cost N850-N900, bottle of ground nut N180 now N220, local rice now sold at N400 instead of N300, a price of bag of parboil rice cost of N10,000 instead of the old price of N9,000 respectively.
It was gathered that, in anticipation of high demand during the month of Ramadan however, fruit dealers have released large quantity into the market, that such as, banana, orange, water melon but at exhobitant prices. One of the fruit dealers told Vanguard that the dealers increased the prices because the demand for it would be higher during the Ramadan period, adding that you know that people consume fruits more than any other foods to break their fasting.
Meanwhile, one of the customers, Auwalu Shehu has condemned the increase in the prices of fruits and foodstuff and advised the sellers to fear God and reduce the price considering the significance of the month to all Muslims, stressed that the situation has compelled some sellers of fruits and other assorted food stuff to have change to another business in search of livelihood.
