Police arrest abductors’ relatives

By Emma Arubi
WARRI—POLICE authorities in Warri have arrested the wife and brother of one of the abductors of Mrs Helen Awala, wife of Hon. Justice A.P.E Awala of the Federal Court of Appeal, Enugu, in Warri, last Wednesday night.
The kidnappers had abducted Mrs. Awala, demanding a whopping N50 million as ransom.

Also arrested are his driver, cook and security man, who revealed the link between the kidnappers and the domestic assistants.

A close family source, who pleaded anonymity, said the kidnappers spoke the Ibo language throughout their operations, suggesting that they may have come from the Eastern part of the country.

Security sources told Vanguard authoritatively that the arrested suspects were helping frantically to get Mrs Awala freed, as one of their wives and brother have been nabbed and are communicating with each other.

Vanguard learnt that with the present situation, the kidnappers have scaled down their ransom to  N1m, which police also declined to succumb to, insisting that the woman be released unconditionally.

The source warned the abductors that should any harm come the way of Mrs Awala, they will get double the punishment.

This was said to have set in disarray the house of the abductors, who in their confusion have shut down all communication lines in the interim.

Mrs Helen Awala, a nurse by profession, is a staff of the Primary Health Care Centre of Warri South Council and is in her mid 50s.

Meanwhile, her whereabout remains unknown, just as her husband is said to be in a state of confusion and wants his wife back home urgently.
