An oil firm, Petroleum Products Monitoring Services Limited (PPMSL), has urged the Federal Government to empower the people of the Niger Delta in order to give a human face to the amnesty package offered by the government.
The firm said in a statement, that the amnesty will only make any meaning to the people, if government could provide them with tools and equipment, such as fishing trawlers, to encourage them in their primary occupation, which is fishing.
According to the firm, government should also create jobs for the youths and provide loans for the people to set up small scale businesses. Commending the Federal Government for creating the Niger Delta Ministry, even after five years of making the same recommendation, it further called on the government to implement all the remaining recommendations which were currently in the archives of the House of Representatives and the Presidency.
Noting that it toured the whole creeks in the region to assess the needs of the people, PPMSL argued that it was in empowering them that there could be lasting peace in the region
