The Federal Ministry of Finance, yesterday warned members of the public to be wary of con men who use the name of the minister, Dr. Mansur Muhtar, for advance fee for contracts.
A statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister, Mrs. Deborah Okafor, in Abuja, yesterday, said, “The fraudsters have been sending mails asking people to fill in the details on their ATM cards, now send mails using Dr Muhtar’s name and asking their recipient to reveal their ATM details and get credited with $500,000 being money for the contract executed for the Federal Government.
“Further details of the fraudulent mail, purportedly from the Minister using fictitious email address and phone number, require the recipients to pay through a swift card payment centre.
“Recipients of these fraudulent mails are hereby warned to ignore such messages and desist from succumbing to callous fraudsters.
The Office of the Honourable Minister of Finance does not award contracts nor handle contract payments.
“These fall within the purview of the concerned Ministries handling the projects. Moreover there are official procedures laid down by the government for contractual obligations and payments and these should be adhered to strictly at all times by any contractor.
“The Federal Ministry of Finance wishes to call on the public to disregard such emails and deal with genuine officials of the pertinent Ministry in respect of any business dealings. Please be warned accordingly.”
