UGHELLI—THE representative of Ughelli North Local Government constituency II in Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Abel Oshevire yesterday ordered the closure of the main road leading to Afiesere Community, Ughelli, as the bridge linking the metropolis and the community is on the verge of collapse.
The bridge was discovered on Thursday to have developed cuts of about three meters deep at both ends.
Oshevire, who had to hurriedly return to the community from Asaba, shortly after he was alerted on the danger posed by the collapsing bridge, told newsmen that the order to close down the road was necessitated by the need to take proactive action to avoid loss of lives.
He said though the road users would experience in conveniences, he urged them to avoid the bridge which he described as a death trap.
He assured that action would be taken to repair the bridge immediately, saying he would meet with the relevant agencies responsible to take palliative measures on the bridge.
According to him “Niger Cat has an on going project on this road. So I will meet with them and impress on them to take action on the bridge. But now in the interest of our safety the bridge has to be closedâ€
The chairman of Afiesere Community, Mr. Newton Evwierhuroma, who also spoke with newsmen, said cracks were noticed on the bridge late on Wednesday and explained that the community had to rush to nearby construction company (ALCON) for help.
Evwierhuroma while appealing to the state government to take urgent steps to repair the bridge said the trips of white and stone base used by ALCON were inadequate to stop the bridge from collapsing.
