By Ifunanya Okafor

Lagos – CAMPAIGN for Democratic Workers Rights (CDWR) has called on the Lagos State government, authorities of the Lagos State Police Command and Lagbus Assest Management Limited to release the remaining five of the seven BRT workers arrested on Monday during a strike and protest over improved conditions of service.

The group in a statement also appealed to the leaders of  Amalgamated Public Corporation, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Service Employees  (AUPCTRE), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and civil society organisations to intervene in this matter so that the rights of the arrested workers could not be trampled upon .

CDWR in the statement by its Chiarman, Comrade Rufus Olusesan, read in part: “The Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights (CDWR) condemns the actions of the Lagbus Asset Management Limited, the state Commissioner of Police and the Lagos State government for the arrest of 7 drivers of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) who went on strike early on  Monday, 17 August 2009 with other workers to press home their demands for improved condition of service, adequate remunerations/increment in salary, provision of comprehensive insurance policy for workers, recall of indiscriminately sacked drivers and end to contract staffing etc.”
