Flood wreaks havoc in FCT

By Henry Umoru

Abuja -TRAGEDY struck in Kubwa and Gwagwalada communities of the Federal Capital Territory yesterday as thousands of people were rendered homeless and property worth millions of naira destroyed following heavy flooding in the areas.

In Kubwa, one of the satellite towns in the nation’s capital city, it was gathered from some of the affected residents that the flood in the area was as a result of opening up of the water reservoir at the Lower Usuma Dam by the FCT water board, just as some attributed it to the heavy rains which later triggered the flooding along side the dam that was opened.

When Vanguard visited Gwagwalada, it was discovered that the communities that were badly affected included Angwan Dodo, Park Road, Kutunku, Abattoir and in Park road, commercial activities were distrupted as the incident affected vehicular movement on the ever busy road.

Narrating her experience, the Principal, Government Secondary School, Kilakwa11, Mrs. Christiana I-Koshim who was in tears when Vanguard visited the area, called on the Federal Capital Territory administration to assist them against the backdrop that they were affected greatly, described the episode as quite unfortunate, adding that it would take them time to recover from the mishap as their property were still socked in water as at the time of the report.
