As part of efforts toÂ improve dredging industry in the country, a Nigerian firm, Dredge Skills and Marine Training Centre Ltd has packaged an international dredging summit that would bring into the country renowned dredging equipment manufacturer and vendors from the US and Europe .
The international dredging summit which is third in its series is expected to hold in Abuja next month has the theme: The Environment of Dredging. Already confirmed for the summit are Ellicott Dredges of USA and Damen Dredging Equipment of Netherlands. Other exhibitors will show marine equipment and dry plants for dredging and civil engineering works.
A press statement by the organizers noted that the manufacturers and dealers would be given opportunity to do Powerpoint presentations on the intricacies of modern dredging technology and their application. More than half of all dredgers working in Nigeria are of the Ellicott brand.
Some of the issues to be looked at includes: â€œemerging opportunities for canalization and waste management in Lagos Stateâ€, â€œthe supply and demand of sand to meet Nigeriaâ€™s current developmental needsâ€, â€œenvironmental impact assessment reportsâ€, â€œbetween navigation and conveyance: the historical imperatives of dredging the River Nigerâ€, â€˜â€™the security options for operating in restive communitiesâ€ and presentations on harbour dredging activities in Nigeria.â€
The last would be covered in a series of symposia by the Nigerian Ports Authority and its joint venture partners like Lagos Channel Management.Â Other topics to be examined are the â€œsiltation studies on the Bonny River channel for the purposes of work that benefits the environment.â€
Other major participants in the programme who will be delivering papers include Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency which implements cabotage law on dredging; Coastal and Reclamation Engineering Services of the UK, Bonny Channel Management, major equipment vendors like Nationwide Equipment USA.
Similarly, National Inland Waterways Authority and various Lagos State Government agencies have been invited to contribute to the level of discussion on dredging operational issues as well as the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development and the Federal Ministry of EnvironmentÂ Â The Federal Ministry of Transport has been invited to kick off the event with an opening speech.
This yearâ€™s summit and exhibition promise to be significant as a forum to shed more light on various issues arising in the Nigerian industry where some state agencies are wresting authority with federal departments like the National Inland Waterways Authority on the issue of inland waterway regulation.
