The President, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Mr Kunle Quadri, says the three tiers of government should be involved in tax enlightenment campaign. Quadri, who made the call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday, said that such periodical tax education would enable tax payers to pay their taxes voluntarily. He said that such enlightenment would also help to improve the system of tax collection in the country.
The CITN President, however, advised the State Internal Revenue Boards to ensure that they used taxpayers money judiciously. He said that the only conviction many tax payers required on voluntary compliance was visible infrastructure, functional health facilities and other development indices.Quadri also called for the use of a vibrant and robust tax administration system to re-engineer the country from the effects of global meltdown.“Nigeria’s tax administration has been neglected over the years and it is the global meltdown that is now making many governments to pay more attention to taxation,†he said.
He warned that no serious investor would be attracted to the country if an effective tax regime was not evolved. He, however, advised the state governments to engage the services of tax professionals with qualified CITN certificates in their tax administration. “It is only an effective and transparent tax environment that can attract investors to the country to invest. “The primary source of income and revenue to government is taxation, hence it is important for all tiers of government to take taxation seriously,†Quadri added.
