Gusau – The Zamfara State Rural Water and Environmental Sanitation Agency (RUWATSAN), will build 32,417 toilets across the state every year, Alhaji Muhammad Bukkuyum, the Programme Manager, has said.
Bukkuyum said in Gusau, yesterday, that the agency had built over one million toilets since its inception in 1999. He said the effort was targeted at meeting the MDGs sanitation mandate and ensuring environmental hygiene by 2015.
“To attain this feat, the agency has involved local governments in the training of communities to participate in
sanitation activities as their contribution towards meeting the goal. The state government is trying to provide fund
toward achieving the target with technical support from UNICEF, the local government council and contribution from
the communities,†he said.
“We started the training from Maru , Tsafe and Bakura local government areas after which other local areas borrowed
a leaf to cover the entire state,†Bukkuyum said.
He said that the agency had also provided drinking water to all Guinea worm prone communities in its efforts to stem
Dracontiasis (Guinea worm disease).
