The Board of AeroÂ Contractors of Nigeria Ltd (ACN) has announced the appointment of Shafiul Syed as the new Managing Director, Fixed Wing.Shafiul Syed, who once worked for British Airways in Lagos, joined Aero from BG Group, a UK head_quartered oil and gas company, with interests spanning the globe, including Nigeria.
A statement issued by the airline in Lagos, said Shaf was Chief of Staff to BG in Egypt, overseeing the companyâ€™s support to the Egyptian Exploration and Production operations (HR, Contracts & Procurement, Marketing, Government Affairs, Health & Safety, Security and IT).
Shaf said of his new role at the airline:Â â€œAero has a great pedigree in Nigeria. The basic tenets of Safety, Security and Reliability are well embedded in our organisation.
â€œWe must build on those values to create a world class business that provides great returns for our shareholders, customers and staff alike.
â€œOur customers will have seen the great value fares we have been offering the N7,000 fares, available when you book online two weeks in advance, or the current N5,000 promotion.
â€œThis will be the way forward for our airline as we progress towards achieving our vision to be the airline of choice in Nigeria.â€
Shaf is married to Arfa and has four daughters – Tahera (10), Khadeejah (8.5), Sajidah (6) and Tayyibah (4). Shaf is a family man with special interests in squash, badminton, cricket, hockey â€¦ and of course, being a stalwart of the airline industry, travel and photography!
His most recent role with BG Group has been back at the UK Head Office in Reading, leading work-streams on a company-wide change programme to devolve more responsibility & accountability to line management, to ensure the business is better placed for profitable growth.
Before BG Group, Shaf worked for British Airways in various capacities and roles, spanning 18 years of service.
His service started at British Airways Engineering as a Sponsored Undergraduate Engineer _ being trained at the same time as completing his degree in Air Transport Engineering at City University, London.
He graduated to spend time in various Engineering departments, including Heathrowâ€™s Terminal 4 Line Maintenance, Aircraft Support Workshops, Inventory Control & Planning and culminating to the position of Production Controller for British Airwaysâ€™ Landing Gear workshop facility.
Shaf led the outsourcing initiative for the sale of this workshop and then chose to move into the commercial side of the airlineâ€™s passenger business, having a stint in Customer Services, Operations Planning, Product & Brand Development and with the airlineâ€™s home territory UK&I Sales Team.In 2001, Shaf moved to Nigeria, initially as Country Manager for British Airways, and was later promoted to Area Manager, West Africa.
During the five years under Shafâ€™s direction, the West African team picked up multiple British Airways global accolades.
While revenue targets were smashed, sales distribution models were revolutionised and cost structures were significantly reduced.
The icing on the cake was a traditional title bestowed to him by the Oba of Lagos in 2005 as the Baâ€™afola of Lagos
