Aero appoints Syed as MD

The Board of Aero Contractors of Nigeria Ltd (ACN) has announced the appointment of Shafiul Syed as the new Managing Director, Fixed Wing.

Shafiul Syed (or Shaf, as he likes to be called) has just joined Aero from BG Group, a UK head_quartered oil and gas company, with interests spanning the globe (including Nigeria).

Shaf was Chief of Staff to BG in Egypt, overseeing the company’s support to the Egyptian Exploration and Production operations (HR, Contracts & Procurement, Marketing, Government Affairs, Health & Safety, Security and IT).

His most recent role with BG Group has been back at the UK Head Office in Reading, leading work_streams on a company_wide change programme to devolve more responsibility & accountability to line management, to ensure the business is better placed for profitable growth.

Before BG Group, Shaf worked for British Airways in various capacities and roles, spanning 18 years of service. His service started at British Airways Engineering as a Sponsored Undergraduate Engineer _ being trained at the same time as completing his degree in Air Transport Engineering at City University, London. Shaf graduated to then spend time in various Engineering departments, including Heathrow’s Terminal 4 Line Maintenance, Aircraft Support Workshops, Inventory Control & Planning and culminating to the position of Production Controller for British Airways’ Landing Gear workshop facility.

Shaf led the outsourcing initiative for the sale of this workshop and then chose to move into the commercial side of the airline’s passenger business, spending stints in Customer Services, Operations Planning, Product & Brand Development and with the airline’s home territory UK&I Sales Team.

In 2001, Shaf moved to Nigeria, initially as Country Manager for British Airways, and was later promoted to Area Manager, West Africa. During the 5 years under Shaf’s direction, the West African Team picked up multiple British Airways global accolades _ revenue targets were smashed, sales distribution models were revolutionised and cost structures were significantly reduced. The icing on the cake was a traditional title bestowed to him by the Oba of Lagos in 2005 as the Ba’afola of Lagos

Shaf joins Aero Contractors of Nigeria Limited as Managing Director, Fixed Wing, to lead the Nigerian airline into the next era of its business development. On his new role at Aero, Shaf said: “Aero has a great pedigree in Nigeria. The basic tenets of Safety, Security and Reliability are well embedded in our organisation. We must build on those values to create a world class business that provides great returns for our shareholders, customers and staff alike.

“Our customers will have seen the great value fares we have been offering the 7,000 Naira fares (available when you book online two weeks in advance) or the current 5,000 Naira promotion. This will be the way forward for our airline as we progress towards achieving our vision to be the airline of choice in Nigeria.”

Shaf is married to Arfa and has four daughters _ Tahera (10), Khadeejah (8.5), Sajidah (6) and Tayyibah (4). Shaf is a family man with special interests in squash, badminton, cricket, hockey … and of course, being a stalwart of the airline industry, travel and photography!
