Umuahia – CHAIRMAN of Aba South Local Government Council, Chief Okezie Erondu Tuesday, escaped being assassinated by gunmen in Aba, the commercial capital of Abia state. However, his security aides were not so lucky, as three of them were killed by the gunmen.
The incident was said to have taken place at Ayaba Umueze. The chairmanâ€™s convoy was said to have been double-crossed at the Ayaba Umueze road junction close to the Abia State Teaching Hospital and the occupants opened fire on the vehicle.
Fortunately, Erondu was not in the vehicle when itÂ was attacked, but three of his security details were killed on the spot, while another was seriously wounded.
Other aids of the chairman in the convoy were said to have escaped unhurt.
In a telephone interview, Erondu said he asked his driver and some security aides to drop of his wife at the airport, with the official car, while he took another vehicle home after the dayâ€™s work.
According to him, the aides were returningÂ home fromÂ the airport when they were attacked by the hoodlums, who thought he was in side his official car.
Erondu, although was not sure who might be behind the attempt on his life, but he however, did not rule out his political opponents.
