Wolves in sheep clothing

By Joshua Osasuyi

“Be on your guard against false prophets; they come to you looking like sheep on the outside, but on the inside they are really like wild wolves.   You will know them by what they do.  Thorn bushes do not bear grapes, and briars do not bear figs.  A healthy tree bears good fruit, but a poor tree bears bad fruit.  A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a poor tree cannot bear good fruit. And any tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown in the fire.  So then, you will know the false prophets by what they do”.  (Matthew 7: 15 – 20) – GNV

“And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many… For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect”.  (Matthew 24: 11, 24).

The topic before us reveals two characters – “WOLVES” and “SHEEP”.  It is therefore very important to differentiate between these two characters for us to know the one we possess.
The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines “WOLF” ‘as a large wild animal of the dog family that lives and hunts in groups’.  The Cruden’s Complete Concordance also mentioned some remarkable features wolf can easily be identified with, such as:  ‘it lives upon rapine; it is violent; cruel and bloody; it is voracious and greedy; it goes abroad by night to seek its prey; and it is the great enemy of flocks of sheep’.  On the other hand, “SHEEP” is a humble animal that does what the leader do without thinking for herself.  Consequently, ‘wolves in sheep’s clothing’ are persons who pretend or seem to be friendly or harmless but are really enemies.

It is a natural phenomenon that in every “original” there are bounds to be “counterfeits”.  It also goes that in every advantage, there must be disadvantage (Read Matthew 13: 24 – 30).  We should not be surprised therefore that the Holy Book categorically stated: there are “wolves in sheep clothing”.  These groups of people are the “hirelings” who are not kingdom minded but they try to pervert the immutable laws of God for the satisfaction of their earthly needs (Read Romans 16 : 17 – 18).  But thank God no matter how they disguise themselves to be agents of light, by their fruits, we shall know them.  (Hebrews 5:4 – 5; Matthew 25:32-33).

This vice did not just start in our generation, but from time immemorial.  Read Ezekiel 22:27 – 30 (Amplified).  The society today has degenerated to the extent that a lot of people are looking every means for survival.  Majority of them who have taken the toll of becoming servants of God (the hirelings) can do anything to acquire mystical power to perform fake miracles, signs and wonders in the name of God for their own selfishness and dishonest gain.  (Read Matthew 24: 11 – 12; Habakkuk 1:8 – 9; Zephaniah 3 : 1 – 4).

The so-called pastors have presented the pastoral office not from a perspective of sacrifice but from that of affluence.  We are now in an era when we rate pastors in various shades and sizes – e.g. upper, middle and lower classes.  The era where programmes being organized have been changed from “Give your life to Jesus” to “Breakthrough Seminars Bonanzas”.  The basic teachings of salvation as the bedrock of Christianity as taught and handed over to us by our Saviour Lord Jesus Christ has been relegated to the background.  The reason for this anomalies cannot be far fetched as people that are supposed to be spare-part dealers, mechanics, carpenters, doctors, teachers, farmers, etc. have found themselves in the pulpit.  They are wolves whose mind is to extort money from the innocent flock and distort the original plan of God (Read Acts 20 : 29 – 30).  Many are called but it is only FEW that have been chosen to be servants of God (Read Matthew 22: 11- 14).  Until these people leave the scene, the position of the pastors -  (i.e the true “Shepherd”) will not be appreciated.  There are too many businessmen in the ministry.  The Church is not a business enterprise but a “Leviticus” office.

It calls to mind to reason that with the proliferation of churches in the world today particularly in our society, a lot of evils and atrocities are still on the increase daily.  The question one may ask is:“Has God forsaken or abandon His people”?  The answer in my own opinion is “NO”.  God had vowed that He would never forsake nor abandon His children.  God can never change or compromised His word – Psalms 77:7-9; 89:34 – 35; Isaiah 49:14-15.  But the high level of corruption that has eaten so deep into the nook and cranny of our society cause the problem.  And more unfortunately, majority of the people behind the pulpit who would have corrected these ills and place a stop at most of the vices in the society are not called by God,but are agents positioned by devil to help to propagate and expand the kingdom of darkness.
