ENUGU—GOVERNOR Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, weekend, described as false, the news report that he deliberately avoided officials of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who staged a rally in Enugu on Friday.
In a statement by the state Commissioner for Information and culture, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke, the government said, “our attention has been drawn to a malicious media report, with the headline, “Rally Chime flees from workers. The report was not only misleading but a figment of the reporter’s imagination.
Perhaps, the reporter was either unaware that the gate he referred to as being used by the Governor had been under lock and key as a result of ongoing rehabilitation.
“For purpose of clarity, Governor Chime was not even at the Government House when the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress visited with members of organised labour.
Rather, the Governor was in a security meeting at the Old Government Lodge over the robbery incident at Nsukka at about the same time the labour officials were at the Lion Building for the rally.
“His Excellency immediately dispatched the Secretary to State Government, Mr. Martin Ilo to receive the Labour Congress members since the Deputy Governor was away on official assignment.
We have taken the pains to keep the records straight because of the false impressions intended by the report. Enugu State has no issue with labour, so, why would the Governor avoid the NLC leaders who had reportedly come to hand a letter through him to His Excellency, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua?â€. he querried.
