Tension in Ibadan over alleged plot to kill politicians

By Ola Ajayi
FRESH tension has pervaded the political atmosphere in Oyo State following a confession by one Hammed Yusuf that the state government listed five prominent Ibadan politicians for elimination.

The details of how the assassination plan is to be carried out are contained in a three-page document sent through a courier to all the people allegedly marked for elimination.

According to the document, the politicians are penciled down for elimination because they seemingly constitute serious threat to the second term bid of the governor of the state.

But Governor Alao-Akala responding, denied the allegations through his Special Adviser on Public Communication, Prince Dotun Oyelade.

He said, “while the allegation is ridiculous in itself, the reason adduced for the diabolical plan is even more ridiculous”.

“That these gentlemen must be out of the way before Akala succeeds himself in the 2011 elections is a fallacy that falls in the face of the reality on ground as Akala believes that his political fortune will at the end of the day be a factor of his performance in his first four years and not in the hands of any individual”, he said

He advised members of the public to discountenance with disdain funny rumours that do not stand up to facts.

The names contained in the document include Senator Teslim Folarin, Senator Lekan Balogun, Chief Femi Lanlehin, Senator Kamardeen Adedibu and Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

The self confession made by the writer also contained previous eliminations that had been carried out. It stated that the writer was one of those who killed the Proprietor of the Cottage Hotel, and one Mr. Ademola Oyadeyi, owner of Demoya Petrol Station on the instruction of a highly placed member of the National Union of Road Transport Worker Union( NURTW) in the state.

Consequent upon the document sent through a courier, one of the people allegedly listed for elimination who is also the candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in the April 2007 election, Senator Ajimobi has petitioned the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Baba Adisa Bolanta complaining about how the previous complaints he made was treated with kid gloves by the former CP, Mr. Bashiru Azeez.

He expressed that in a normal society, no one would take such a serious allegation as one of those things, in view of the past unresolved murders mentioned in the letter.

He said, “I reported a similar plot in the past, but was swept under the carpet and dismissed as unsubstantiated claim by the then Commissioner of Police”. The writer also alleged that the state government has paid the sum of N15m for the execution of the people.
