TOTAL E&P Nigeria Limited has been commended for its laudable sustainable development initiatives. The commendation was made by the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Upstream) when some of its members recently inspectedÂ community projects in the companyâ€™s operational area in OML 58 in Rivers State. Projects inspected included roads, hospitals, schools, farms, the Egi independent power plant, among others.
The team was led by Senator Nimi Barigha Amange. Others in the team were Senator Simeon Ajibola; Clerk of the Committee, Mr. S.D. Fulani; representatives of NAPIMS, Mrs Henrientta Obioma-Igwe and Mr. Eyeoyubo Ebi and legislative aides.
Senator Amange said he was pleased that the company has continued to add value to its host communities, and especially commended electricity supply to 18 towns and villages, courtesy of the Egi Independent Power Plant. He also praised Total for the enviable network of roads it has built in its host communities.
At a dinner for the visiting team, the Deputy Managing Director (Corporate), Mr. Alek Musa, stated that â€œIt is part of our business model to make sure that the communities become part of our business.â€ He added that Total was moving to a new phase, in which emphasis is placed on the people taking ownership of the opportunities being created.
The delegation also visited the permanent site of the Institute of Petroleum Studies at the University of Port Harcourt. The institute, which is the brainchild of Total, has been engaged in post-graduate studies of Engineering graduates since 2003. Recently, a post- graduate diploma programme was introduced specifically for candidates from the host communities.
Three facilities of Total E&P Nigeria Limited recently got the ISO 14001 certification.
The facilities are FSO Unity, Ofon and Amenam Kpono field. The Amenam Kpono field comprises two offshore blocks in OML 99 and 170, about 30km off the coast in the eastern part of the Niger-Delta in Nigeria. Ofon is also offshore while the FSO Unity is the storage facility for much of crude from these fields.
Before the certification, the facilities had to go through two stage audit processes. It was in meeting the high standards of the British Standard Institute (BSI) through the final certification audit process that led to the issuance of the certificates. Among the benefits of implementing the ISO 14001 system are: Â·Provision of a framework for the improvement of Health, Safety and Environment performances.
Â·Enhance the safety of all personnel on site.
Â·Possible reduction of environmentâ€™s costs, such as energy savings, wastes treatment, emission taxes, etc Enhanced credibility among stakeholders, especially environment awareness groups, government regulatory bodies, etc
