Reps: Ningi disowns anti-Bankole sms

ABUJA — Indication that another plots to unseat the leadership of the House of Representatives may be on, was revealed yesterday as Abdul Ningi (PDP/Bauchi) yesterday disowned a text message (sms) purportedly sent by him to members of the House, asking that the “tyrannical” leader of the House of Representatives and his “cohorts” be removed.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Bayero Nafada, however, said the leadership of the House was aware of the sms and that  a “powerful” committee has been set up to find out its source.

Last month, a move to unseat the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Tunde Akogun, and the Chief Whip of the House, Emeka Ihedioha, collapsed.

The two had been accused by some members of the House of corruption  in the handling of  N310 million released for the last House retreat and 10 years anniversary celebration of continued democracy in Nigeria.

Abdul Ningi had raised a Point-of-Order, citing Order 5 (3) of the Standing House Rule, saying his privileges have been abused in a supposed plot that he said he knew nothing about.

“I want to draw the attention of the House to a text message I received on my phone last Sunday. I was away for a function in Europe when I returned and found it on my phone,” he said.

According to him, the author of the text message impersonated him, perhaps to give the plot some credibility.

He then proceeded to read the sms, which when translated from its carefree, non compliance to standard writing, reads: “Noble colleagues, this is the time for change in the House leadership.

We cannot allow a tyrant  to continue to lead us. Please, support the group, ‘Movement for Positive Change.’ We believe it is time for Bankole and his cohorts to get out…Signed Abdull Ningi.”

Distancing himself from the sms, Ningi said that he was very embarrassed by the massage.

“The message, is even posted on the internet,” he said, adding:“I have no hand in it. It is not with my consent; it is unethical, immoral and does not bear my style of pressing home my grievance.”

“I would want the person or group behind this to be brought out and made to apologise to me”, he said.
