ABUJA—The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Steel, Mallam Aminu Shehu Shagari has condemned the reported negotiation between the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa and Mr. Lakshmi Mittal, world leading steel magnet, over his desire to acquire Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL) 14 months after the Federal Government cancelled the concession granted Global Infrastructure Nigerian Limited (GINL) over ASCL.
Shagari also said that the Federal Government has not shown any commitment towards attaining its vision 20-20-20 as it has neglected the steel sector, which he said, is the backbone of industrialisation.
GINL is owned by Prammod Mittal, the junior bother of Lakshmi Mittal.
It was reported that last month in a Nigerian daily that Aondoakaa had entered into negations with Lakshmi in London last March through officials of acelor-Mittal, owned by Lakshmi.
In an exclusive chat with Vanguard in Abuja over the weekend, Shagari said he was shocked by the report. According to him, even the Minister of Mines and Solid Minerals, Mrs Deziene Allison Maduekwe was also taken by surprise over the report.
“I read a story in the front page of Thisday Newspaper in March this year, with a headline: FG approaches another Mittal to take over ASCL.
He said his committee was worried by the report, so it made many attempts to get the Minister of Mines and Solid Minerals to find out why the Federal Government had decided to go that way without consultation.
