BENIN — EDO State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has canvassed for an upward review of the revenue accruing to states from the federation accounts against the backdrop of the increase in the responsibilities of the states.
Governor Oshiomhole made the call recently while receiving commissioners from the South-South geo-political region in the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), who were in his office to present its report of the downward review of remunerations of political, public and judicial officers to him.
He said that since President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had agreed that it was not the business of the Federal Government to sink boreholes or build schools in the local governments among other functions, it became inevitable that the Federal Government should not keep the current percentage of revenue alloca-tion from the federation accounts to itself.
His words: “I am very happy with President Yar’Adua’s decision on a number of issues. For example, it is not the Federal Government’s business to go and sink boreholes in a local governments or build primary school blocks in my local government. One can go on and on and I think he has taken this decision that these are better left to the local governments and the states.
“The only thing that he has to do is for the Federal Government to also reduce the percentage it is currently taking so that states and local governments can have resources to deal with these issues at these levels.â€
“We also can see increasingly that the federal government cannot fund the Police. This morning I have to present 31 vehicles to the Police and earlier in the year we gave them 25 making a total of about 56 vehicles and every month we have to give overhead and from time to time there are special challenges, you have to provide resources, so there is a case for higher revenue to the states and less revenue to the federalâ€.
“So, if your commission pays more attention to this as I know you have been trying to do, it would help so that we who are workers can sit down and do our workâ€.
He commended the chairman of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Engr. Hammed Tukur whose courage in the handling of issues has been unparallel.
The governor recalled that under ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, the RMAFC Chairman raised a number of issues publicly, saying that there are no true Nigerians like that.
