Nigerian media, heroes— Akunyili…calls for training, good salary

ABUJA—The Minister of Information and Communication, Professor Dora Akunyili has described Nigeria Media as “Heroes”, saying despite control and sanctions placed on them, it remained critical observer of the country’s growing democracy.

Akunyili who made this statement in Abuja at the launching of the Africa Media Barometer –Nigeria 2008 organised by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), also said “despite closure of some media houses, restriction on circulation of newspapers did not stop them from doing what they think is right. Diverse, critical and vibrant media we enjoy today is as a result of long a difficult struggle that was fought”, added Akunyili.

The minister who was represented by a director from the ministry, Mr. Angulu H.A said Nigeria media contributed in making democracy possible in the country by consolidating democracy, “Nigeria is enjoying longest period of civilian rule”.

“Nigeria media is diverse, vibrant and critical but on the other hand we have to acknowledge that all is not well in the media sector. There are some that are praise singers, rather than looking at all sides of the story.

There are journalists who cannot live on what they earn, putting them in position where they cannot write opposition feature, there are some who have to fear for their lives in carrying out their professional duties” she stated.

She, however, canvassed for that media owner should educate and train Nigeria journalist, “independence of Editors and journalists have to be improved, professional standard have to be viewed and good salary has to be ensured.
