My Pikin: Court adjourns case to July 22

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, yesterday, adjourned till 22 July, 2009, further hearing in the trial of the Chief Executive Office of Barewa Pharmaceutical Ltd, makers of killer My Pikin Baby Teething Mixture, which killed over 80 children in the country, Kola Gbadegbesin Okunlola. Adeyemo Abiodun and Egbele Eiomosele are also standing trial alongside Okunlola.

The court will, meanwhile, hear the contempt proceeding brought against the NTA by the accused persons, who had alleged that the television station in its network news broadcast on the matter, aired the said news in a way that suggested that they have been found guilty, whereas the case was still pending before the court.

The accused persons urged the court to allow them to play the tape for the court to see for itself, the offensive materials, while the court will at the next adjourned date, rule on whether of not, to play the video clips containing alleged contempt materials.

It would be recalled that the charge preferred against the accused persons read:

* That you Kola Okunlola, Adeyemo Abiodun, Egbele Eiomosele and Barewa Pharmaceutical Limited of 1-5 Olugbo Close, Shasha Road Akuwonjo, Lagos State within the Jurisdiction of this Court: on or about October, 2008 manufactured an adulterated drug to wit:

My Pikin Baby Teething Mixture with the intent to cause death or grievous bodily harm to members of the public and thereby committed an of Fence, contrary to Section 1 (a) of  the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods (Miscellaneous provisions) Act No. 25 of 1999 and punishable under section 3 of the same Act.

* That you Kola Okunlola, Adeyerno Abiodun, Egbele Eromosele and Barewa Pharmaceutical Ltd of 1 – 5 Olugbo Close, Shasha Road Akuwonjo, Lagos state within the Jurisdiction of this Court on or about October, 2008 distributed an adulterated drug to wit:

My Pikin Baby Teething Mixture to Roca Pharmacy of 34 Balogun Road, Agege, Lagos with the intent to cause death or grievous bodily harm to members of the public and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1 (a) of the counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No. 25 of 1999 and punishable under Section 3 of the same Act.
