Aba—The traditional ruler of Ogbujioma community, Ogbaku in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo state, Eze Shitu Ejiogu has raised alarm, over what he alleged is a plot by an unnamed group of influential individuals in his community to incite his subjects and cause chaos in the area, with the intent to dethrone him because he converted to Islam.
Eze Ejiogu, a former Catholic, converted to Islam last year. Speaking to journalists in Aba, the traditional ruler said that he changed religion due to personal reasons and claimed that he consulted widely with his people before he converted.
He said that nobody was against his plan then and wondered why some individuals from the area, have mounted a campaign of calumny against him following his action.
He alleged that those who were plotting against him, had influenced the publication of several damaging stories against him, including one in a local Newspaper, which he said suggested he cast aspersions on members of Knight of St. Mulumba, an allegation he denied.
He said one of his senior cabinet chiefs is the arrow head of the group, who had alleged that his conversion was for material gain.
According to him, the group said “if I want to be a Muslim, I should look for another autonomous community where Muslims are dominant and become a ruler over themâ€.
Eze Ejiogu said that there was nothing wrong in his decision, saying “in as much as the 1999 constitution guarantees freedom of worship and association, it is my inalienable right to choose the religion of my choiceâ€.
