NINE of the 14-member legislative arm of Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State have signed the notice of impeachment of the council chairman, Emmanuel Sorokwu.
However, the leader of the legislative arm of the council, Pius Eziashi, representing Ward 14 who is one the nine councillors that signed the impeachment notice sent to the state assembly for ratification in the last week of June, is alleging threat “to our livesâ€. He alleged that they had been receiving death threats.
The state leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed a suspension order on seven of the councillors rooting for the impeachment. The state PDP chairman, Chief Peter Nwaoboshi, also suspended the chairman of PDP in the local government, Dr. Ikechukwu Enwenwa.
In the four-page impeachment notice, the councillors accused the embattled chairman of “administrative incompetence, financial impropriety, non-compliance with Delta State Local Government Law and hamstringing of the legislature.â€
Asked about the next line of action following their suspension from the party, Eziashi said: “It is only a rumour because we have not got any letter to that effect up till now.†He pointed out that the impeachment stands, saying that “the Delta State Local Government Amendment Law of 2008 section 23 c empowers us to ask for income and expenditure from our chairman.â€
However, one of few councillors opposed to the impeachment, Mr. Collins Iwebunor, representing Ward 10, described what is happening as power play. Trouble started when Sorokwu sacked the supervisory councillors and sought replacement which was said to have been objected to by the feuding councillors.
