Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has called on President Umaru Yar’Adua to concentrate on finding solutions for the various problems of development threatening the country, rather than dissipating his energies on the issue of the Councils which he said had been settled by the pronouncement of the Supreme Court.
The Speaker said this on his arrival at the Murtala Muhammed Airport from Philadelphia, USA, yesterday where he, along with other members of the Assembly, attended the National Council of State legislatures’ summit and training tour.
He further urged the president to prevail on the National Assembly to make consequential provisions with respect to the listing of the names of the Local Council Development Areas created in Lagos State in the constitution rather than calling for their cancellation.
Ikuforiji, who cut short his trip because of the letter written by Yar’Adua over the disputed Councils, was surprised at the new development and asked President Yar’Adua to tow the path of constitutionality and rule of law in dealing with federating units as he used to do.
He queried the rationale for the action of the President, saying the President might have been pressurized by some people who are desirous of creating crisis in the state and that the President should not behave as if he hates the people of Lagos State.
According to him, the letter was another ploy to disrupt development going on in every sector of human life in the state. He, however, said the law made by the Assembly in respect of the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the state remained legal and could not be re-examined.
“It is amazing that the President who paid the balance of the withheld councils’ fund within months of assuming office will now be giving Lagos State such an ultimatum.
“They only want to cause another disruption in the system but that is not possible in Lagos State. I think the issue should be looked into more closely. There is more to it than meets the eye,†he said.
What informs this new development? But I know he is surrounded by some people who really want to cause problem,†he said.
“Is Yar’Adua sending signal that he hates us in Lagos State? I think he should concentrate on solving the multifarious problems threatening the nation than dissipating his energies on settled matter like the local councils. Anyway in Lagos State people have spoken that they want the councils and the Assembly has done its job and this cannot be revisited,â€he said.
