PORT HARCOURTâ€”NIGERIA Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) limited has urged the nation to take step to re-awaken interest in Mathematics subject among students round the country.
Lamenting the decline, which the firm said had led to increased failures of the subject in examinations,Â Â Manager, Community Relations and Development of the firm, Mr. Andy Odeh, who spoke during the finals of a Mathematics quiz competition organized by the firm in partnership with the Rivers State government for some secondary schools in the state, urged government, school authorities, parents and other stakeholders to take up the challenge to reawaken interest in the subject among students.
Describing the subject as the mother of all science subjects, Mr. Andy said the NLNG had to partner with the state government to come up with the quiz for secondary schools in the state as a way to contribute to the effort to encourage and reward interests in the subject.
Continuing, he appealed to government and other policy makers to promote collaboration between the private sector to enhance mathematics teaching and learning.
Also commenting on the competition where Government Comprehensive secondary school, Borokiri came first with Government Secondary school, Emohua and Comprehensive Secondary school, Odiemerenyi emerging second and third place respectively ,Mrs. Mary Solomon, Director, Higher Education, Ministry of Education, who represented the state Commissioner for Education lauded the initiative just as she also enjoined other corporate organizations in the state to emulate the NLNG by organizing similar programmes for students in secondary schools.
A total of one hundred and six secondary schools drawn from ten local government areas participated in the competition. And out of this only ten of the schools made it to the final stage.
