THE newly appointed  Chairman of Nigeria Netherlands Chamber of Commerce (NNCC) and Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer, Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr. Reginald Ihejiahi has promised to boost economic co- operation between Nigeria and Netherlands.
He made this promise during the handing over ceremony organised in Lagos last week saying, “ The event of global economic recession in the past one year have shown how linked the economies of nations are after all. They also show the dangers of isolationism and superiority of co-operation as an option in tackling mutual problems.â€
He stated that there has been a cordial relationship between Nigeria and Netherlands but when compared to the potential both countries have only scratched the surface.
Ihejiahi pointed out that the dealings between the two countries have been informal as these are mostly unaccounted for in the official data available.
According to him, “ Much of the challenge the new leadership would address is to place right on the table some of the under table transactions going on. The Chamber will further its role as a platform for fostering co operation between the two countries.â€He further promised to work with the Dutch -based counterpart and the Netherlands African Business Council to provide proper understanding and appreciation of opportunities that exist in the two environments.
According to him, “ Considering the demonstrated commitment of the council members, and all stakeholders, I am quite confident that we will justify the confidence placed in me and the entire council members.†He commended his predecessor, Mr. Basil Omiyi for steering the leadership of the Chamber for the past three years, saying “ As a Chamber and as corporate organisations, we owe a lot to Mr Omiyi for the work he has done since he took over the leadership of the Chamber in September 2006. The number of inward and outward trade missions between Nigeria and Netherlands attest to the assertion.â€
Other commendation he made was to the Royal Dutch Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Ariel Van Der Wiel, which he said showed commitment to the strengthening of the economic and cultural ties between Nigeria and Netherlands and also commended Nigerian Ambassador to Nertherlands , Her Excellency, Dr. (Mrs.) N.N Akanbi who had supported the Chamber in various ways.
In his speech, the outgoing Chairman, Mr. Omiyi said he believed that Fidelity Bank boss has all it takes to lead the Chamber to greater height.
He charged the new Chairman to use his position in the banking industry to attract more members to the Chmaber as there are more to gain in both trade and commerce.According to him, “ I have done my best in growing our membership. We are made progress because we have sub committees who were dedicated. Therefore, we expect you to put life to NNCC as we need to get Dutch business back into the country.â€
