ABAKALIKI—A faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ebonyi state, yesterday, staged a peaceful protest at the NLC National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abakaliki, praying the national officers to remove the state chairman of the council, Mr David Ogba.
The protesters carried placards with unprintable allegation against Ogba and why the Omar-led NEC should help the state council remove him (Ogba) as chairman of Ebonyi council.
Mid drama ensued when the protesters got to the gate of the venue of the NLC NEC meeting, which led to fisticuffs at the gate, as the Ogba group tried to stop the protesters led by the Mr Onyemachi Eke of the Joint Public Negotiating Council from entering the venue of the meeting.
But the embattled Ogba, who also doubles as Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) said that those with placards were the people who contested elections against him in 2007, but lost.
Leader of the protesters, Onyemachi Eke, however, alleged that for some time, the state Chairman of NLC, Mr Ogba has been working against the interests of labour in the state, insisting that labour in the state had since passed a vote of no confidence on him.
