Following the meeting between the Professional Development Committee of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and institutions of higher learning where the educational programme take place (training providers) which held early this year, it has been decided that centralized examination for the students of the Institute will be holding in June and November every year.
This is part of the on-going efforts by the management of the Institute to ensure that its educational programme in Nigeria remain capable of producing highly knowledgeable, skilled and demand-responsive manpower for the industry.
These revelations came from the National Executive Director of CILT, Nigeria, Mr. Fracis Ehiquese last week at the Instituteâ€™s extra-ordinary general meeting. According to him, two examination diets will hold each year, adding that the training providers will set and forward examination questions to CILT, Nigeria for moderation which will, in turn, send it to international arm of the institute for final moderation.
He explained further â€œCILT, Nigeria will produce the examination questions and answer scripts. The question and answer scripts are to be sent to the training providers in sealed envelope one week to the examination across the country.
CILT, Nigeria will organise, coordinate and monitor the entire examination to ensure standards are kept. The Institute will register the student as student/Affiliate members with CILT, Northern Ireland, and the training providers will register most if not all their students by August 2009.â€
Ehiguese said that as the CILT is the world most established organisation for logistics and transport professionals, it must be seen as a body making contributions that are beneficial to all.
He added that CILT has the mandate of promoting, developing and coordinating the study and advancement of the science and art of logistics and transport management, explaining that the Institute provides government and the entire society an authoritative view on logistics and transport issues.
While CILT was founded in the UK in 1919, it spread its tentacles to Nigeria much more later and was established in 1958 under the umbrella of the parent body in UK. Since its establishment, the Institute has been involved in overseeing, regulating, training and certification of transport professionals nationwide.
The Institute has its network in over 40 countries which include UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, China, Malaysia, USA, Canada, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Kenya, Uganda and so forth.
An holder of CILT certificate is an expert in logistics and transport who is qualified to carry out services such as organisation and control of city transport, feasibility survey on logistics and transport projects, investment appraisal with reference to transport services and logistics operations as well as design of city transportation, planning of new town and re-planning of transportation systems of old towns.
Other services include analysis of city traffic flow pattern and traffic generation, rationalization, control and forecasting of traffic and consultancy services in logistics, transport and allied industries.
Apart from the International Certificate (Diploma and Advanced Diploma Certificate in Logistics and Transport, CILT also offers the continuing Professional Development Programme which improves and broadens knowledge, skill and competencies of participants.
These educational programmes are offered by CILT through its training providers that include the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, Zaria; Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso; Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron; The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Federal University of Technology, Owerri and Lagos State University.
