ABOUT N7 billion was realised last week at the official fund raising ceremony of the first ever International Cancer Centre Abuja (ICCA) to meet the N10 billion target. The fund is meant to construct a cancer centre that would provide services in the areas of diagnosis, treatment and research for cancer patients.
Chief launcher Aminu Dantata kick donated N500 million while Mangal Dahiru and friends donated N2 billion. Co-chief launchers Dangote Aliko donated N1 billion. Rochas Okorocha in collaboration with international donors gave the sum of N210 million while the Governor’s Forum put together N720 million.
The People’s Democratic Party donated N10 million, and the group of 20 ex-governors donated N40 million while Isiaku Rabiu gave a total of N260 million.
First Lady Turai Yar‘Adua said the whole idea of establishing the proposed ICCA was born out of her utmost desire to contribute her little quota to achieve a focused delivery of health care. She said the centre was meant to render services to women and children especially the rural and urban poor.
“My resolve to stand up to the menace of cancer is occasioned by the devastating effects of the disease on our population.†She also pointed out that the more enlightened and financially capable among Nigerians suffering from cancer have been able to travel out to seek professional and medical attention in the form of diagnosis and treatment.
Vice President Good Luck Jonathan called for more focus on health issue saying,“as a nation we should specialise in some areas of health problem. Nigeria as a country should take leadership at continental level and initiative at global level.
If we compute the foreign exchange we spend abroad on medical bill, we will realise that it is enough to build a befitting health facility that will save the lives of our people.â€
