IMSU post-UME candidates may miss exam over fees

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Many students seeking admission into the Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, may not sit for the forthcoming post-University Matriculation Examination (UME), following the fraudulent activities of some banks,  charged with the responsibility of collecting the fees for the institution’s post-UME examination.

Vanguard investigations revealed that some of the banks defied the instruction handed down by the University,  and went ahead to collect money from all the applicants irrespective of the faculty.

One of the University’s professor, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, told Vanguard that the reason for asking different banks to collect money from prospective students of specific faculties was to make it easy to identify  the students.

“I was in First Bank to see things for myself. I found out that instead of limiting themselves to the specific faculties we asked them to, they went ahead to collect money from every prospective student”, he said.

The university don lamented that it appeared the banks were only interested in their commission and not the interest of the students, adding that with this development, the students already have problems, even before going into the examination hall.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of IMSU, Mr. Henry Acholonu, confirmed the development, adding that the university had received several complaints on the issues.

Why is it that the management of IMSU is too porous to the extent that the cannot exhibit managerial skills in handling admissions and students’ related issues. The banks are fraudulent and they are using their offices to swindle the helpless students because the ground has been watered for the by IMSU management.
This is an issue that deserves swift attention.

Why should the students be made to suffer the flaws of the bank(s).If the latter breached the terms of agreement, they ought to bear the consequences;and not the students desperately seeking admission.
