Surprise: Newcastle to pay Martins more

Underperforming Super Eagles striker, Obafemi Martins, who arrived late for the first day of training at Newcastle yesterday, has been offered an amazing pay rise as the club intend to use the cash bait to hold the player back in their fold as they prepare for the Championship next season.

According to reports, Martins, who had an indifferent season last term for both club and country, is expected to earn £65,000 a week from £60,000 under the deal he signed three years ago when he joined from Inter Milan.
With the likes of Michael Owen eyeing a move away from Tyneside, Newcastle are desperate to keep the Nigerian hit-man, who has failed to start in Nigeria’s last two 2010 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers.

And it is increasingly appearing likely that Martins might be condemned to play Championship football next season after it emerged last night that Stoke chairman Peter Coates has dismissed speculation linking the club with a bid for Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins.

The  Potters,  as  Stoke are called, have been linked with a number of strikers, with West Ham’s Dean Ashton being the main one, but Coates said Martins was not on their list.
“There’s nothing in that one. We haven’t had contact or discussions about him at all,” he said.
“I don’t know where the story has come from, but there is no substance to it.”

  1. Idonukson says:

Internationally, Martins would not be heard if he stays in Newcastle. He should remember what happened to JJ Okocha in hull city. Okocha’s fame today is based on his past records before he moved to qatar and hull city.Martins is young trying to build his career, so he should not allow money to gain control of him. Let him look for a better club.

  2. Chucks says:

Martin is a disappointment. What did he go to do with Newcastle in the first place? Now he is relegated with that club and I am sure this has affected his national calls. He needs to leave that dungeon or else we will not hear him again. He is a bunch of talents but since he joined that club, he has been failing. Move out man, get a big club, exercise your talents and shine.

  3. Joel says:

the fact that he wants to stay means he has not gotten a better offer. wish him luck sha.

  4. Tony Bubel says:

I advise Martins to go ahead because in his quest to go to bigger, division one club will always make him warm the bench like others do in chelsea. Pray for success in your career. Forward ever, backward never!

  5. Chie says:

Martins from all indications want to stay – he’s expressed that some weeks back. That’s his choice so let him stay. Am sure Newcastle will be back to the Premiership after a year.

  6. Johnnie Agbodike says:

Age is not on his side, thats the problem with their ages,so don’t blame Martins

  7. My candid advise for Martins is that he should not go down with Newscastle because, is going to destroy his careers.Do everything possible to go back to serie A or any first division club in europe.Don’t belittle yourself because your a great star, we don’t want to miss you in the super Eagles squad!!!

    Go for the best!!!

  8. Martins must be sure of what he’s doing, he is still young and can be more useful for the elite clubs. What happens if Newcastle fails to come back to premier league next season? By then his fame may have dwindled that his career will nosedive. Beware Brother Martins.
