Utuama hails UPU founding fathers

By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI—The Deputy Governor of Delta state, Prof. Amos Agbe Utuama (SAN), has extolled the virtues of the founding fathers of Urhobo Progress Union, saying they were leaders with foresight who knew about the necessity for unity in Urhobo nation.

Prof. Utuama made this assertion while addressing a mammoth crowd of women during the inauguration of the Urhobo Progress Union women’s wing, Ughievwen Kingdom chapter, at Otu-Jeremi in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

He said:   “It is an epoch-making day in the lives of UPU women’s wing because this is the first of its kind in the history of women activities in Ughievwen kingdom and this was as a result of the hard work of Lady A. Agbaza, national president UPU women’s wing.

“I found out that the overall purpose of formation of UPU by veteran leaders like Chief Mukoro Mowoe, Chief Sanubi and others was to harness unity among ourselves.”

There is need for men and women to work together for a common purpose. I commend the efforts of the founding fathers of UPU.”

He said Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan gave out micro-credit loan to about 25,000 persons in the state with women as majority because of his recognition of the role women could play to change society for good.

He urged the women to form cluster groups of minimum of 10 per group and assured them of government’s speedy response.

Earlier in her speech president of UPU women’s wing, Ughievwen Kingdom chapter, Mrs. Daji Eunice Oguma, said the formation of the women’s wing of UPU in Ughievwen kingdom was borne out of necessity to foster the age-long principle of the complimentary role of Urhobo women in giving assistance to their husbands in all aspects of life as partners in the journey through the labyrinth of human existence.

She expressed appreciation to the wife of deputy governor of Delta state, Mrs. Nelly Utuama, and her husband Prof. Amos Agbe Utuama, for showing them love, solidarity and exemplary principles in bringing their dream of inaugurating the group to reality.
