OWERRI—Angered by non-payment of their salaries and allowances for eight months, the workers of Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State have shut the gates of the Council Headquarters, Dikenafai.
Some of the angry workers told Vanguard that their current action would have been executed a long time ago but for the intervention and plea of some sons of the council.
Those who intervened on behalf of the state government, according to the workers included Chief Eze Duruiheoma (SAN), the Special Adviser to the Governor on Inter Party Affairs, Chief Bonny Ebili and the member representing the local council in the State House of Assembly, Chief Larry Ajaero.
Vanguard gathered that the Transition Committee Chairman, Mr. C.O. Duru, tried in vain at meetings called at the instance of the chairman to explain the situation of things to the workers, but the aggrieved workers called him unprintable names.
It was also gathered that the workers organised a peaceful demonstration after locking the gates but were confronted by the police in the area.
The situation became rowdy, when the protesting workers learnt that the chairman and some members of Ideato South branch of National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) had been arrested by the police.
