Panic as petrol tanker falls, spills contents

By Albert Akpor
LAGOS — VEHICULAR movements in and around major roads, especially the Ikorodu road, Lagos were brought to a stand still yesterday as a petrol tanker skidded off its route, fell and spilled its content on the expressway.

The tanker, police sources said, was loaded with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol and was coming from Yaba axis apparently heading towards the Maryland area when the accident occurred.

The tanker which reports said was in a high speed apparently had a break failure and lost control. It skidded across the median of the expressway and fell, splashing its content on a substantial part of the roads, including adjoining streets.

It was gathered that the accident caused stampede amongst commuters while motorists made U-turn ostensibly afraid of the aftermath of the spillage.

The accident, sources hinted, further later caused traffic logjam for minutes as motorists drove against traffic. The police later arrived and commenced traffic control and evacuation of the tanker.

The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, who confirmed the accident said no casualty was recorded.
