To ensure that the dream to provide  affordable housing accommodation is realized, the Federal Government in collaboration with Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) have plans to acquire $50 million worth of hydra form equipments from South Africa.
To this end, the Minister of State for Works, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Grace Ekpenwre will lead the officials of REDAN to South Africa to sign Memorandum of Association (MoU) with the producers of the equipments.
This development came to light recently, in Abuja, during the inauguration of REDAN Private Public Partnership (PPP) committee for 400,000 units nationwide housing scheme.
Ekpenwre, while inaugurating the committee, said with the current pragmatic approach by the private sector developers and the government to housing issues, the country should able to close the housing deficit gap by the year 2020.
“With the inauguration of the REDAN’s PPP Committee, I know that we are set for action. And I believe that if we are able to put in 400,000 housing units annually, I can also say that by the year 2020, I think we should have been able to close the deficit gap in housing that is put at about 14_16 million.
“If we do this systematically with 400,000 housing units coming from REDAN alone, and all other contributors, I think this country can safely say that we should be able to provide adequate housing for all our people by the year 2020,†she stated.
The minister charged members of the committee to work closely with the PPP committee of the ministry, noting, “as you are aware, the ministry also has its own PPP committee, it has been working with a number of developers.
“I want to assure you that we are willing partners with you because we know that we need you to provide the needed housing for Nigerians, because there no way government at any level can do it alone.â€
She urged Nigerians to embrace the new hydra form building technology, noting that the hydra form inter_locking block is very beautiful.
Speaking earlier, the President of REDAN, Chief Olabode Afolayan, noted that REDAN will build a total of 400, 000 affordable housing units across the country in the next one year. He disclosed that, REDAN has already started the construction of 40, 000 housing units as the pilot scheme in some cities across the country, which he said will gulp N120 billion.
