UNITED States of America Sunday night shocked the world when they took an amazing 2-0 lead against the kings of soccer, Brazil in the Confederation Cup final at Ellis Park, Johannesburg.
That they even sent European champions packing turned them raves of the moment. The game had hardly warmed up when Dempsey struck with a surprise touch that rolled into the net and sent all hoping for another American wonder.
Donvan’s beautiful strike increased their tally to 2-0 in the 27th minute. Americans back home celebrated, thumbing up for their Major League Soccer which produced most of their players.
They defended well and held tight till referee’s whistle ended the half.
But on resumption, the samba boys showed the quality they are made of. Their coach Dunga has always been an apostle of direct football. He showed it when he played and now reflecting it in the team he is managing.
They moved forward from the blast of the whistle this paid off just one minute later when Fabiano scored in the 46th minute. He was not done as he headed again in the 74th minute. Lucia earned the winner six minutes to full time and the American wonder turned nightmare.
But the Americans left South Africa commanding respect from all just as home country Bafana Bafana did although they lost their third place match to Spain 3-2 during the extra time. The match had ended 2-2 in regulation time.
“We had the game on our hands especially in the first half.
The early minute goal in the second half inspired this great Brazil side and I think they the game was even. But a side must win and they won. I congratulate them but we look forward to a great World Cup back on this soil next year,†Bradley, the USA coach said.
“I think that we worked for the goals but I have to commend the boys for their spirit. They never gave up. That’s the way to play football and I am happy they got the results, we are the champions,†Dunga said.
