ABUJAâ€”Minister of Women Affair and Social Development, Mrs. Salamatu Suleiman has revealed that 70% of people living below povertyÂ line in Nigeria are women.
Mrs. Suleiman who stated this recently during an advocacy visit to Kebbi State, noted that women and children are more vulnerable and there is need to empower women in order to reduce poverty gap in the country.
During a visit to the Kebbi State house, she urged Governor Saâ€™idu Dakingari, to ensure that women are empowered in the state.
She said, â€œSeveral socio-economic factors have led to the poor economic status of a large segment of Nigerian women, such that 70% of people living below the poverty line are women.â€
She stressed that girlâ€™s education in the country, especially in Kebbi State must be encouraged.
