VP, First Lady extol Maryam’s virtues

MINNA—Vice President Good Luck Jonathan yesterday arrived the Minna Hill Top residence of  General Ibrahim Bgadamosi Babangida (rtd)  with his entourage on condolence visist to the former Nigerian military President, and praised his late wife, Mrs. Maryam Babangida, as the quintessential First Lady.

In the same vein, the First Lady of the Federation, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua, sent a delegation to the IBBs led by Justice Binta Nyako, Adamawa State First Lady, where Turai said that the loss of Maryam was a loss to mankind.
Several other dignitaries from all walks of life have continued to besiege the home of the IBBs for the fifth day running, since her demise in California, USA, last Saturday.

The VP, who arrived at 3pm, accompanied by the Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu and Kano State Governor, Mallam  Ahmed Shakaroau and other government functionaries, was received at the porch of the IBBs, by the former President.

Also with IBB were former military Head of state, Gen. Abdulsami Abubakar (rtd), and IBB’s first son, Mohammed Babangida.
After profusely greeting IBB and his close associates, the VP was ushered into the living room where he commiserated with more family members inside.

Speaking to the press after, the Vice President said that the late Maryam was the epitome of a First lady.

“She was the best example of a First Lady,” he said,

“For the first time, she was able to show that the  wife of a sitting President can actually influence development of the most oppressed of any society,” he said.

“It is in recognition of her noble role as a former Fist Lady that you saw such heavy presence of Federal Government  since her demise

“If the President where in the country, he would have led the delegation. But I am here to represent him, and I know that he shares her loss with the rest of her family.  I pray that God grants the family the strength to bear her loss”, he said.

The VP’s visit lasted 20 minutes.

Speaking on behalf of the First Lady, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua, Justice Nyako said, “Though I have been here to pay my respect and to condole with the family, the First Lady of the Federation, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua, has called me from Saudi Arabia, where she is attending to her husband. She said that I should come and represent her and to inform the family that she lacks the words to describe the death of  Hajia Marayam Babangida,” she said.

“We have come back to tell the family that the First Lady is deeply moved by her death. She said that we should tell the family that she was with them, that she is praying with them. She said that her death is a loss to the whole nation and to the entire world.” she said.
